About the Management Intern Program

The NIH Management Intern Program was established in 1957. The Program has graduated over 400 interns since its inception. The NIH currently has more than 50 former interns on staff. The Program offers highly motivated NIH employees an opportunity to explore different administrative fields, gain invaluable insight into the NIH, and change careers. Graduates have become some of NIH's most respected administrative managers. Former interns are currently in a variety of NIH occupations, including Executive Officers and Administrative Officers, Budget Officers and Analysts, Deputy Director of Legislation and Legislative Analysts, Program and Management Analysts, Grants and Contract Management Specialist, Writer/Editor, Public Affairs Specialists, Human Resource Management Specialists, EEO Officer and Specialists and Information Technology Specialist.

This is a Program that has a 50-plus-year history of developing leaders!

We recommend that you register for an information session by emailing MI_Info@mail.nih.gov with the info session date in the subject line.

Management Intern Information Sessions are designed to familiarize prospective interns with information from different perspectives. A member of the Administrative Training Committee (ATC) will describe how the program works, an OHR representative will discuss eligibility, and the MI Program Manager will discuss the application process.  Additionally, both past and current MIs will share their experiences with applying to the program and managing their MI careers.

MI Application and Program Deadlines

The NIH MI recruitment season begins in February and concludes in June.

  • The vacancy announcement posts February 24 and closes March 19.
  • Qualified applicants are invited to participate in a written exercise at Executive Plaza South on either April 19 or 20.
  • Those making it through the written exercise are invited to a group exercise at Natcher on May 23.
  • Finalists interview in front of a panel on either June 14 or 15 at Natcher.
  • Shortly thereafter the top candidates will be offered a Management Intern position to begin on August 1, 2012 and end July 31, 2014.

Administrative Training Committee
