Director (NCATS)
National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), a newly proposed Center of the NIH. The central role of NCATS will be to catalyze the generation of innovative methods and technologies that will enhance the development, testing, and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions. NCATS will accomplish its mission by supporting and enabling research on the process of therapeutics discovery, development, testing, and implementation into patient care. By studying the steps in the therapeutics development pipeline, identifying constriction points, and testing novel approaches to circumvent those constriction points, NCATS works to advance the entire discipline. In this way, NCATS catalyzes translational medicine and therapeutics research in other NIH Institutes and Centers, academia, industry and other sectors.
This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an exceptional leader to serve as the chief executive for NCATS and lead all aspects of this highly complex, newly proposed scientific organization. The Director, NCATS, will provide visionary leadership, executive management, and strategic direction for streamlining the process for therapeutics development. S/He will be responsible for leading all NCATS initiatives, communicating with various sectors and stakeholders, overseeing the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program, and facilitating effective collaborations among government, academia, industry, venture capitalists, non-profit and community organizations. The Director, NCATS, will identify ways to leverage existing NIH resources to speed the delivery of new, more effective medical products to patients. S/He stay abreast of trends and emerging scientific opportunities and challenges in translational science, encouraging new efforts that incorporate novel and innovative strategies for research and development. The Director will identify and manage financial and human resource needs, with executive accountability for making complex and strategic decisions to optimize resource usage and mitigate risks to achieve desired results. This position reports directly to the Director, National Institutes of Health.

Required Qualifications
Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a field related to the mission of the NIH and have senior-level research experience and expert scientific knowledge in the broad fields of biomedical, clinical, and translational research. Candidates must have demonstrated the ability to work within a complex, scientific organization and have expertise in providing executive leadership, direction and coordination of biomedical research and clinical programs. He/She must be recognized by scientists, industry leaders, educators and research administrators as an outstanding and authoritative scientific executive and administrator within his/her profession, both nationally and internationally. The Director must possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to represent the NIH at the highest levels within the government, including Congress, and with nationally and internationally recognized scientific leaders and officials of academic, research, and other institutes and organizations as well as professional and advocacy groups.
Salary/Benefits
The Director, NCATS, will be appointed at a salary commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. Full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided.
