NIH Hiring Event for Veterans
"Honoring our sacred trust with America's veterans means doing all we can to help them find work when they come home so they never feel as if the American Dream they fought to defend is out of reach for them and their families." President Obama.

In November 2009, President Barack Obama announced a groundbreaking initiative designed to transform the federal government into the model employer of America?s veterans. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) met this challenge by hosting its very first Hiring Event for Veterans in August of 2010. Based on the success of this Event, for both applicants and the NIH Community, we will be sponsoring another INVITATION-ONLY Event in early June.
Who Should Apply:
- Are you interested in a career opportunity with benefits and the potential for career progression?
- Do you want to work in an environment that embraces diversity and inclusion and the talent you can offer?
- Are you eligible for a Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA)?
If so, now is the time for you to begin your career of service. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is sponsoring a historic day-long Federal Hiring Event for Veterans. Representatives from various Institutes and Centers will be reviewing resumes prior to the Event, and inviting prospective candidates for interviews.
Eligibility Requirements:
The Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA) is an excepted authority that allows agencies to appoint eligible veterans without competition to a position in the excepted service at any grade level up to and including a GS-11 or equivalent. After successfully completing 2 years, you can be converted to the competitive service.
- Are you in receipt of a campaign badge for service during a war or in a campaign or expedition? OR
- Are you a disabled Veteran? OR

- Are you a Veteran who separated from active duty within the last 3 years? AND
- Did you separate under honorable conditions (this means an honorable or general discharge)?
- Do you meet the qualification requirements for the position?
If so, you may meet the requirements to qualify under the Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA) authority and we encourage you to submit your resume for consideration to our upcoming Hiring Event!
Using the Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA), found at 5 C.F.R. PART 307, qualified candidates who meet the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) guidelines can be hired non-competitively to an appointment in the excepted service.
